Wizz Air recently experienced significant disruptions due to multiple simultaneous weather events across Europe causing issues with slot management at airports. These events overwhelmed air traffic control authorities and Eurocontrol’s capacity, causing widespread delays and cancellations across the European aviation industry, impacting Wizz Air’s operations.
On June 26 alone, there were around 450,000 delays in European airspace, of which 360,000 were due to weather, resulting in significant delays of over three hours. Over the past four weeks, this extraordinary event has caused Wizz Air to experience 30,000 more airport slot delays than the same period last year.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our passengers, but this issue is beyond our control. Wizz Air was preparing for a smooth summer season, but the air traffic control system is facing major issues this summer. As an industry, we must work with the relevant air traffic control authorities, including Eurocontrol, to address these issues and ensure that appropriate mitigation measures are in place to minimise disruption.
Wizz Air will continue to inform passengers who have booked directly with the airline of any schedule changes via SMS and email. For timely schedule updates and direct customer support, passengers are strongly encouraged to book directly on our website or app. Passengers who have booked through Online Travel Agents (OTAs) or other third parties should check the status of their flights and request changes through the respective OTAs, if necessary.
It is important to note that this issue affects many airlines and limits hotel capacity across Europe. Wizz Air is doing all it can to accommodate as many passengers as possible, but passengers may need to make their own accommodation arrangements in the event of limited room availability and external partners being unable to accommodate all requests. Passengers can be assured that they can claim a refund of the relevant actual expenses up to a reasonable amount through the Wizz Air official website.
