Europe hit by heatwave
Anyone heading to Europe during the Northern Hemisphere summer should be aware that the continent is currently experiencing record high temperatures, resulting in wildfires in some countries and deaths from heatstroke.
Tourists have been warned to travel with caution to popular EU destinations in Greece, Italy, Spain and several other destinations this summer, according to Schengen.News.
Temperatures in some of these countries have risen to as high as 40 degrees Celsius.
High temperatures in Greece have caused temperatures to rise to 43°C in some areas, leading to many tourists going missing and some even being found dead. This has happened not only on the Greek mainland but also on several islands, including Crete, Rhodes and Samos.
In Italy, the Health Ministry issued the highest Level 3 alert for several cities, including Palermo and Rome.
Tourists are advised not to leave litter behind, especially glass, and to make sure to properly extinguish cigarettes to prevent forest fires.
Scientists say the current heat is due to climate change and the El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean, and that Europe’s heatwaves are likely to continue.
Is it still safe to travel?
Officials say travel to these European hotspots remains safe, so long as tourists follow the advice of local authorities and take all necessary precautions to stay safe.
Travelers are advised to wear sunscreen, stay hydrated and stay in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
