2 July 2024 — Researchers from the Computer Architecture – Operating Systems Group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) have joined EdgeAI-Trust, a three-year project co-funded by the Chips Joint Undertaking (JU) that aims to decentralise edge artificial intelligence to help transform industries such as mobility, manufacturing and agriculture.
The project, which involves 53 partners from across Europe, aims to decentralize AI to transform industries such as mobility, manufacturing and agriculture.
Launched on 1 May 2024, EdgeAI-Trust has a consortium of 53 partners from across Europe, including major suppliers, OEMs, and leading research and academic institutions. The project focuses on distributing AI processing across multiple devices to build a trusted edge AI ecosystem.
This approach leverages the diverse expertise within the consortium to drive AI advancements and highlights the important role the semiconductor industry plays in developing and deploying purpose-built chips such as AI accelerators that deliver greater scalability and lower latency.
BSC’s research will deliver AI models that meet safety requirements, including enabling explainability and traceability, and efficient platform mapping. It will leverage key results from the EU-funded projects SAFEXPLAIN and REBECCA and extend them to create AI models that meet the appropriate safety requirements, and provide software solutions to verify compliance. BSC will work with multiple members of the consortium to define and generate these AI models, efficiently map them to hardware platforms, provide platform-level safety services, and build comprehensive safety cases and concepts.
“EdgeAI-Trust provides BSC with the opportunity to test AI-related technologies in the context of complex industrial use cases, allowing us to reach a higher technology readiness level and paving the way for the exploitation of AI-related assets,” said Jaume Abella, EdgeAI-Trust Principal Investigator at BSC and co-team leader of the Computer Architecture Operating Systems research group.
EdgeAI-Trust will contribute to the implementation of the Chips JU Strategic Plan, in particular integrating trusted Edge AI technologies into complex heterogeneous components and systems. The project objectives are:
Develop reliable domain-agnostic AI architectures Create reliable and collaborative large-scale edge AI solutions Increase the reliability of edge AI solutions Develop toolchains to optimize and validate edge AI solutions Large-scale impact and economic leadership with the EdgeAI EDEM platform
