CHENNAI: Interim Chief Justice of the Madras High Court R Mahadevan on Saturday expressed concern over excessive use of digital devices and said there was insufficient awareness among the people about the measures required to safeguard their vision health.
“Vision care is crucial as it directly impacts quality of life, pursuit of knowledge, productivity and participation in society,” said Interim Chief Justice of the Madras High Court R Mahadevan, in his keynote address after inaugurating the two-day Indian Conference on Intraocular Implants and Refractive Surgery here.
“There is a surge in eye health problems, including refractive errors, which are exacerbated by environmental pollution and lifestyle changes such as excessive use of digital devices for work and entertainment. However, there have been great advancements in ophthalmic science and technology, and it is gratifying to see that this noble field continues to produce experts,” he said, adding that now is the time to harness the power of technology and human expertise to reach out to the unreached.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister MK Stalin said it was an honour for Chennai city, known for its top-notch eye care institutions, to host this national event.
“This conference reflects the breadth and depth of knowledge and expertise being shared,” Stalin said in his congratulatory remarks.
Amar Agarwal, Secretary General, IIRSI and Chairman, Dr Agarwal Group of Eye Hospitals, said the two-day conference will include valuable programmes and live coverage of surgical sessions, enabling participants to learn new techniques in cataract and refractive surgery.
The IIRSI 2024 Congress will feature over 40 scientific sessions on topics such as cataract and refractive surgery, advances in ophthalmology, paediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastics and glaucoma.
Ophthalmologists from India and across the world were felicitated at the convention for their contribution to the specialty. Over 4,000 ophthalmologists from across the country and around 50 expert speakers, including international luminaries in intraocular implants, LASIK and refractive surgery, are participating in the conference.
