It’s that time of year again: the shorelines of the Amalfi and Dalmatian coasts welcome sunbathers, spritzes are served at outdoor cafés, and pedestrians throng the charming medieval towns. I travel to Europe every summer, and despite the crowds, I never tire of looking at the caldera at sunset in Santorini, the whitewashed buildings of Puglia, or people-watching along the street from my favorite French bistro.
As a travel writer, I’ve observed Europeans embrace the summer in effortlessly chic fashion, from stylish linen pieces to cotton with colorful silk accents and tailored blazers. On a recent visit to Verona to dine in Michelin-star chef Giancarlo Perbellini’s renowned open kitchen, I was so glad I had loose-waisted pants that could get a few stains when the seventh delicious course was brought to my table. On a particularly rainy day walking the magnificent grounds of the Hotel Royal Victoria on Lake Como, a good pair of grippy sneakers saved my Italian travel dreams from ending in a bad fall that sent me to the hospital. More proof that small choices when packing can add up to big savings later.
