It’s amazing to think that in less than 100 years, we’ve come a long way, from inventing the microwave to experimenting with artificial intelligence and virtual reality.
Many of the things we now take for granted were once amazing inventions and innovations, but that’s the nature of technology: it’s constantly changing, improving, and solving problems, to the point where younger generations can’t even imagine a world without it.

Let’s look at mobile phones: the first mobile phone was launched in 1973, the first smartphones came out in the 90s, and then the iPhone came out in 2007 and completely revolutionised technology.
According to a 2024 study by the Pew Research Center, 90% of Americans now own a smartphone, up from just 35% in 2011. And, unsurprisingly, 18- to 29-year-olds are more reliant on their phones than any other age group.
So while we wait for the next blockbuster tech gadget to impress Gen Alpha, take a look at what world-changing products were invented or released the year you were born (or at least up until 2010) and marvel at how much the world has changed since then.
