ELECOM, the Japanese electronics manufacturer known for inventing the world’s first oval mouse in 1988, has launched a new device that combines an AC charger and a mobile battery to create a highly versatile power station.
The DE-AC08-5000 is ultra-portable, with a slim design that easily fits into a small bag or pouch. It comes with both a 5,000mAh battery and plug, and supports USB Power Delivery 20W, so you can quickly charge your smartphone and never run out of battery unexpectedly.
ELECOM claims that the battery can charge a typical 1,800mAh smartphone approximately 1.6 times and a 3,000mAh smartphone approximately 0.9 times while the device is off. What makes this device different from other power banks is that you can plug it into a wall outlet, connect your smartphone directly to it, and use it like a regular charger. Conveniently, it can charge both the power bank and the connected device at the same time, with the latter taking priority until it’s fully charged.

The power plug has a swing mechanism so it can be stored inside the unit when not in use. The battery level can be checked with a 4-level LED indicator so you can always see how much power is left.
Elecom’s 2-in-1 AC charger and power bank comes in two versions: black and Shiro-chan (pictured above), a version of Elecom’s quirky line of white devices with cartoon faces. Both are priced the same at 5,980 yen (about $37).
According to ELECOM, the device uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can withstand approximately 500 charging cycles, has five protection functions including overcharge, overdischarge, overcurrent, short circuit protection and temperature detection, and is UN38.3 compliant, making it safe for transport on airplanes.
